The gap ventures fall into
The pattern is familiar to anyone who has commercialised research. The result is real: peer-reviewed, demonstrated, admired. The demonstrator works, in the hands of the people who built it, on the data it was built with. And then the venture reaches the part the lab never prepares you for: a first customer who needs it to work unattended, an investor who needs evidence the prototype cannot produce, a deployment into an operation with rules the research never met.
What is missing is rarely intelligence or effort. It is a product boundary: a deliberate decision about what the product is, what stays research, and what the first customers are actually buying. Everything else, the engineering, the evidence, the pricing of the roadmap, hangs off that decision, and most technical ventures make it by accident. How we respect the science
Commercialisation has a deserved reputation for flattening the science it touches: rounding capabilities up, rounding caveats down, and leaving the researchers to watch their work oversold. We work the other way. The science leads; productisation sharpens its value rather than overwriting it. Claims run behind evidence. Caveats survive into the marketing. A product built that way earns slower, sturdier trust, which is the only kind that survives contact with a serious customer's technical diligence, the same test we help investors apply.
